The next meeting of West Dorset Humanists will be held on Thursday 23rd February at 7.30pm when we will be having a 'Humanist Hat Debate'. Hope you can join us for a chance to discuss a whole lot of questions about Humanism with other free thinkers. Science and Religion - Complementary or Contradictory?

The topic for the next meeting of the West Dorset Humanists is SCIENCE & RELIGION - COMPLEMENTARY OR CONTRADICTORY? David Nunn, a Government Scientist will investigate the age old debate about whether these two bodies of thought work together or against each other. Using some fun methods, looking at the origins of both science and religion, and how both have developed and evolved, a scientific approach to this problem is used. We hope this will produce some interesting results, perhaps even providing an answer! There is some audience participation and an invitation to open your mind to some different ways to consider this prickly subject.

The next meeting of West Dorset Humanists will be held on Thursday 24th November, 7.30pm at the Wessex Royale Hotel, High West Street Dorchester. John Hubbard - who teaches English at Bournemouth School - will explore in this talk a selection of Hardy's verse with readings and commentary, trying to discover what Hardy made of the world in which he lived, and how he sustained himself in it. This talk will be highly enjoyable for people already familiar with his works – as well as a great introduction for those coming to them for the first time. Humanism and Sexuality

Thanks to Jo Adams for a fascinating talk on Humanism and Sexuality at the Wessex Royale on Thursday 28th July. Jo provided us with a warm, thoughtful and often humorous insight into a humanist view of sexuality which is life affirming, and based on respect and equality.

The numbers of people attending West Dorset Humanist meetings continues to grow and it's great to see so many new and old members.

West Dorset Humanists was started in January 2010 and since then we have grown into a lively and diverse group. The next meeting of West Dorset Humanists will be held on Thursday, July 28th 7.30 at the Wessex Royale Hotel, 32 High St. West, Dorchester DT1 1UP.

A talk by Jo Adams former Chair of the National Sex Education Forum and member of the Labour Government's Independent Advisory Group on Sexual Health and HIV. Almost all world religions make rigid rules about what is and is not acceptable in terms of our experience and expression of sex. At the moment, for example, there is an active lobby pressing for Abstinence Education with young people despite the lack of evidence of the success of such approaches. This talk will explore what a more positive, holistic and person-centred model of sex and sexuality might look like.

Jo developed the non-abstinence based “Let’s Leave it Till Later” programme of national training supporting young people to delay early sex now used throughout the UK and also in Ireland. She worked as a consultant for the Department of Health on strategies to reduce teenage pregnancy, to prevent HIV and STIs and to promote positive sexual health. Jo is the author of a number of books related to self-esteem and to the promotion of positive sexual health and ten years ago was awarded an MBE for her services to sexual health work nationally.
